Design decisions that cost money at the printing stage
- Full bleed dark backgrounds double the ink cost on digital and can smudge at the fold. A white or light border often looks better and costs less, and we will say so rather than quietly charging you for the ink.
- Thin decorative fonts disappear on flex. Below about 40pt at flex resolution, hairline serifs simply do not resolve. We tell you before printing rather than after, which is the advantage of the designer sitting next to the machine.
- RGB greens and oranges shift most in CMYK. If your logo is built around a bright orange, ask for a printed proof before a large run, because the screen is lying to you slightly and only paper tells the truth.
- Keep the vector source file somewhere safe and email a copy to yourself. Businesses come to us every month having lost their logo and needing it redrawn from a photograph of their own signboard.
